Meritocracy and soft-dictatorship

Meritocracy, if executed well, works great for most things involving many people; one can see it in superb action on many Open Source software projects. But there seems to be a need to have some sort of a soft-dictatorship as well - be it for an overall guidance and direction, or to make certain high-level choices.

The mobile phone needs to go

I’ve been giving this a bit of a thought lately, and decided to be a drama queen and post about it on the internet, because I’m pretty sure there are many out there who are with me on this, and can pitch in with their thoughts. It’s an expected rejection of a commonly used technological innovation - Do I need this mobile phone at all?

Leave Your Customers Alone Please

My digital TV (more of a football TV these days), internet and mobile phone providers carpet bomb me with sms alerts, auto-dialed calls and to top it all, with their appaling customer care. The customer care even has ridiculous questions like “did you receive the bill?”, “will you pay it today?”, “what’s going to be your mode of payment?”.

Hang the fuck up already.

Sometimes it’s not a bad idea at all to stick to an old method that still works. My power supply gets disconnected a few days after the last date of payment. Same goes for the water supply. And this works very efficiently as a matter of fact, and I pay up every month as (ir)regularly as the other bills.

Too much customer care can also be experienced at these self-service setups. I walked into a mega chain clusterfuck electronics showroom the other day, and for every section of the place, they had at least three uniformed employees following me, asking if I needed any help. I was there to just browse while my friend was looking at the gaming section, and was just walking around from one section to another. They have nothing less than 10 of these sections, so you can imagine. This is true for most self-service stores and showrooms in this country.

Half-assed modernisation like this is dangerous for your business. You don’t have to hire so many, just because the labour is cheap in this country. Quit being a nagging little bitch and leave your customers alone please. They’re smart enough to contact you if there’s a problem and that’s when you need to be there.
